Art and artists at Heartlands

An exploration of artists' studios and workshops in Cornwall to inform and inspire the design of artists' and art spaces at Heartlands. Made by STBY (www.stby.eu) as part of the inclusive design facilitation for Heartlands. Feel free to comment on the clips, whether you are an artist or part of one of the design teams working on Heartlands.

Inclusive design facilitation

We tell these stories here to facilitate an inclusive design process for Heartlands. The website aims to inform and inspire the design process with stories from artists about the use of the spaces where they work, and how they engage with people who visit them there. These stories are used to create a solid base for speculations with the artists about future uses of Heartlands.

Provided by STBY, HHC and local artists

This process of inclusive design is facilitated by STBY ("Standby", Bas Raijmakers and Geke van Dijk) and the Helen Hamlyn Centre (at the Royal College of Art, Yanki Lee) both based in London, just as two of the three design teams. To be able to work locally in Cornwall, we collaborate extensively with the local artists who you see in the videos on these pages: Peter Martin, Alexis Stevens, Tristan Harris, Angelina Boscarelli and Ollie Oakenshield of Rogue Theatre and Debbie Martin.

Meet the artists in their studios

The first step in our arts related inclusive design facilitation was to visit the artists in their workshops and studios and talk about how they work there. Next, we edited the video of these visits into stories about the workshops, and about how the artists engage with visitors and clients in their studios. These stories can be found at the top of the list at the right hand side of each page.

Imagine the future uses of the buildings with "Personas"

As an extra layer we then created so-called "Personas" of the three types of arts related buildings we look at with this project: the large multifunctional Making Place, a combined shop and studio (the Crescent Studios), and a more private artist studio (the Terrace Studios). Through these Personas, the buildings tell the story of how they imagine their use at Heartlands. The buildings tell these stories by referring to their users, the artists.

Access to all the clips via categories

The many clips we used to build the stories are also separately accessible through categories that we assigned to indicate the main issues covered in them. This could be handy if one wants to go back to specific elements later, answering questions such as "What did they say about ceilings again?" or "How did they deal with their waste?" You can find all these categories in the right column of each page. Please note that the clips in here are all also part of one of the stories. So you will see only clips you've seen before in the stories, if you started there (which we recommend).

Feel free to comment

At the bottom of each page you will find a box to add your comments. Please feel free to do so, whether you are an artist or a design team member or a local resident who is interested in the arts. This website will grow while we continue the inclusive design facilitation until sometime in July 2008. So keep an eye on what is added later on too. You can use an RSS feed to do so if you are familiar with that. To get in touch with Bas Raijmakers personally please mail to bas[at]stby[dot]eu.
